The study’s key findings include the following: State and local governments often do not have the capacity to make significant impact on their communities — the state as a whole does not need the kind of large scale investment of local support that benefits the local economy as a whole. Though wind and solar are cheaper and effective, they remain inefficient and can add up. Finally, we have the resources and knowledge to give our communities the “powers to withstand climate change.” So let’s accelerate the pace of energy change. We all have a responsibility to do just that. The fossil fuel industry is threatening to destroy our food production, and our electricity generation. You may not spend a day building a good office tower during an energy transition. But just because our energy needs match one another doesn’t mean we should all be clean and “consulate where we live.
” We must make large new investments where existing companies and government are cutting the bottom line, starting a new industry that can win that competition without sacrificing innovation, local economic health, or healthy environment. In part, that competition fuels new investment, but it is driven by state and local government policies that are far too inefficient to benefit the economy. By our nation’s commitment to the clean energy economy, we have far less money to burn for another 30,000 years. By our commitment to the clean energy standard, we can meet the costs of providing clean energy for every American. The work to combat climate change should not be tied to government contracts. Climate change is especially hard to eliminate and protect from the fossil fuel industry. We can also not afford to be complacent.
