This past Saturday, for a free reading of “The Wisdom of Charm,” I agreed to speak with the renowned Jewish art journalist Professor Andrew Greenberg. This conversation drew me to the “Jewish Advocate” level and led me to find myself in the New York offices of Prof. Greenberg, a history professor who has spent the past twenty years covering Jewish institutions. He has written numerous works on anti-Semitism dealing with the many disparate views which shape Jewish life.
His books will both be taught by top Jewish scholars and examined before Jewish students enter the “Jewish Advocate.” I met with Professor Greenberg and wrote a letter informing him of my visit. When he declined his offer of an advance interview, I was grateful of his limited knowledge of Jewish literature. A second year in the law school of the University of California at Berkeley, he was a top law professor and editor in chief of Linguistic Intelligencer and at which I studied both classics of the Jewish language and Holocaust denial in the sciences. One of his masterful scholarly and ethnographic writings is The Jew’s Handbook, and I highly recommend this for any student interested in the diverse Jewish communities of today. He is a recipient of the George Waldorf Medal from the Holocaust Memorial Fund, the highest honor accorded to a Yale graduate-student in one of the world’s most prestigious foreign universities. As a fellow scholar and professor, he has widely promoted both Jewish and civil rights issues for the Jewish community living over the western hemisphere, including a symposium at Rockefeller University in Los Angeles in January and the 2008 Annual Meeting of the Knesset in Baltimore.
After visiting the Yedioth Ahronoth for the first time in 1998, Dr. Greenberg established a “Rabbiological Education Alliance” working in cooperation with many social justice and sustainability activism organizations such as Black Lives Matter, the American Civil Liberties Union, LGBTQ NY, and the United Jewish Movement. He was awarded honorary doctorate in 1977 from the New York State Jewish Forum. Although he is happy to comment on our history, this is a controversial subject. I’ve never participated in that event and am not in touch with the fact that I am from such a progressive and hard left Jewish community as I am less interested in discussing the history of the Jewish faith of our time. In addition — or rather, there is an obligation as an elected official to assess the situation and make a case for all positions that hold the highest possible standard, and no moral judgment for the opinions of their appointees, and no impartial treatment when they fail to act that way or cause harm
