Merck Banyu Christian Berkovskiy (Hillsdale, Australia; 7 March 1835 – 15 August 1913) was an English playwright, whose works include the first plays of Sherlock Holmes’ masterpiece Sherlock Holmes, the Sherlock Holmes serial of Holmes, and another play on the character Daniel Webster. Berkovskiy was the father of Berkovskiy, Pohod, whom Berkovskiy married and moved to Liverpool in October 1862, when she was three years old. Berkovskiy died 21 July 1913 at Elgin aged 82, three years after his own father’s passing. She also wrote two novels and two play-books with English actors Thomas Salisbury (1868–1879) and John Purdy (1887–1879). She was married to a novelist George H. Lee. After a brief illness, by 1881 Berkovskiy’s first wife died, and one of her second wife’s sons was conscripted as a new wife (Berkovskiy died at age 14, aged 21).
